What is stress?
Stress can be caused by a wide variety of factors. Most of us are familiar with mental or emotional stress caused by a heavy workload, worries or interpersonal relationships. But environmental factors such as noise, heat, cold, air pollution, and physical conditions such as a particularly high level of training, calorie deficit or excess, pathogens or lack of sleep are also stress factors. The General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) is a concept developed by the Canadian endocrinologist Hans Selye. It describes the body's general reaction to stressors and the associated physiological adaptation process. The GAS consists of three successive phases: alarm reaction, resistance and exhaustion. In the first phase, the body reacts immediately to the stressor and activates the sympathetic nervous system. Stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released to prepare the body for a rapid response. This reaction includes increased heart rate, increased breathing, increased blood pressure and increased alertness to prepare the body for the threat. The second phase is the resistance phase. In this phase, the body tries to adapt to the ongoing stressor and mobilize its energy to deal with the strain. The body shows increased resistance to the stressor by optimizing its resources and adjusting hormone production. This phase can last for a certain period of time and allows the body to adapt to the stress load and maintain its performance. Phase 3 is the exhaustion phase. If the stressor continues for a long period of time and exceeds the body's ability to adapt, physical and psychological resources can become exhausted. In this phase, the body's resistance decreases and symptoms such as chronic fatigue, emotional exhaustion, increased susceptibility to disease and mental disorders appear. The role of adaptogens Adaptogens are herbal substances that have long been used in traditional medicine and are also used in modern dietary supplements. Adaptogens are intended to help the body adapt to stress and improve its resilience without causing specific side effects. According to research, this effect is based on the modulation of the release of stress hormones and the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. They are also said to modulate the activity of the immune system and strengthen the immune response to stressors.
